Person with Complex and Distressing Behaviour
Thursday, November 17th, 2005These were some of the helpful tips ( questions and answers) taken from my one day workshop/training course about person with learning difficulties and complex behaviour on 27th October 2005.
Questions on Complex and Distressing Behaviour
1. Does having a learning difficulty make people more likely to have complex behaviour? Answer: Generally no although if there is an additional mental health problem then they may.
2. Might the environment people with learning difficulties live in cause complex and distressing behaviours? Answer: Yes if the environment and the carers are not sensitive to the needs of the individuals e.g. too much noise, too little activity, not enough personal space.
3. Might communication problems cause complex and distressing behaviour? Answer: Yes if individual cannot make their needs known or do not understand what is expected of them.
4. Might poor eyesight in a person with learning difficulties cause complex and distressing behaviours? Answer: Yes, if their environment is not equipped to their needs and if they become frustrated with their lack of ability to perform tasks especially if they have previously been able to perform them.
5. Might poor hearing in a person with learning difficulties cause complex and distressing behaviour? Answer: Yes, as people feel isolated and are often unclear of instructions and so can appear to be being awkward.
6. When someone is becoming aggressive should you; a) try hold unto them to calm them down? b) give them space and stay out of the way? c) send them to their room until they are quiet? d) tell them they cannot have a cup of tea unless they behave themselves.
Answer: usually b) although each person is an individual and should be treated as such. a), c), and d) are all illegal answers and abusive.
7. It is important to keep records on peoples behaviours? If so why? Answer: Yes to ensure consistent approach and to look for triggers.
8. Give three reasons why people may become aggressive: Answer: Some reasons are; fear, boredom, pain, loneliness, drugs, (illegal and illicit), reactive, mental health problems
9. Why might a person try to wander away? Answer: Coping with stress, searching for security, assertion of will, response to boredom or over stimulation, reaction to prolonged use of some medication.
